What is the European Accident Statement?
The European Accident Statement (also called the joint accident statement, or constat amiable in French) has the same layout across all of Europe. Both drivers fill in ONE form together, each in their own language, and each keeps a copy. It speeds up the claims process, but it does not decide who is at fault.
- Stick to the facts; never admit or sign an admission of liability.
- Do not sign anything you do not understand or do not agree with.
- No changes after signing; each driver keeps their own copy.
Box by box
Boxes 1 to 5
Date, place, injuries, other damage and witnesses. Note witnesses with name and phone number; that information is gold later on.
Boxes 6 to 8
Policyholder, vehicle and insurer, for both vehicles (column A and B). You will find these details on the insurance certificate or registration document.
Box 9
The driver, with driving licence details. If someone other than the owner was driving, this is where it goes.
Boxes 10 and 11
Where was the vehicle hit, and what visible damage is there? Keep it short and factual.
Box 12
The tick boxes describing how the accident happened. The most important box: only tick what really applies, and write the number of ticks in the box at the bottom.
Box 13
The sketch: roads, directions of travel, position of the vehicles at the moment of impact, traffic signs.
